Trevor Steven appreciation thread

Fantastic, fantastic Rolls Royce of a player. I was stood behind the goals at the Dell once when our corner came in and was headed way clear of the area by a Southampton defender. My moment of disappointment ended seconds later as the ball slammed into the back of the net with what was (I'm told) a sublime volley to the clearance from Tricky Trev. From where I stood the goal post exactly obscured the shot!
I blame heysel for losing him, and the rest of that great team.
Wonder what he'd fetch in today's money. 80? 90?

Vision, pace, silky skill, scored goals, rarely injured, never got the credit he deserved from the media, even now when older players are talked about he rarely gets a mention by pundits,it was a priveldge to see him play in one of the greatest teams to grace Goodison
We know though mate, for we saw what he was capable of with our own eyes, the media had a thing about us even back then, they labelled us "the team with no stars"in my eyes they were not just stars, they were superstars.:)

Boring, snore, zzzzz, YET another international break. Anyone care about them? Not me, no.

So, with no Everton this weekend, let have a Saturday morning look at another Everton great. Trevor Steven today. A member of the great '80's side, the right winger (not politically FFS) provided crosses that set up many goals, often finding the head of Andy Gray, even providing the cross for his goal in the '84 final (the one that media bores describe as "controversial" with no justification).

Sadly one of those to move on for European football (bah), but let's leave that there today. Let's instead look at a massively skilful player.

The chap is on Twitter too, for those inclined, often talking of the blues - @TrevorSteven63

Brilliant player, one of my all time favs, but the Andy Gray goal (the one that media bores describe as "controversial" with no justification) ? Really? So it wasn't controversial? And It's not justified? As much as we all enjoyed that final, if that goal was given against us, I thing we'd have all been up in arms about it & the ref would have been added to the Clive Thomas list of refs, never to be forgotten. Which grows longer by the season.

...McMahon says he wanted out because we wouldn't give him the salary he wanted in his new contract. After he left, I remember him answering abuse from Gwladys St by rubbing his thumb and first finger together suggesting it was all to do with money.
Another supposed Evertonian gone wrong in my opinion Eggs.

One of the goals that stands out for me is him cutting back onto his right from the left corner of the box, leaving the defender completely for dead and curling one into the top corner of the Gwladys Street goal in the 80's. The place went ballistic. One of my all time favourite Everton players and the creative spark for a lot of superb moments in that 80s team.

My favourite player from the mid 80s team one that was littered with quality. His goals and assists were staggering from a wide player, but showed his versatility when he played centrally and even up front once I recall, where his class shone through. Underrated by the media (nothing changes there, as Chris waddle was flavour of the month playing for Spurs at the time) but not by Everton fans. Waddle went to marseille for 5m and we got a paltry 1.5m off Rangers when the fee went to a tribunal.

....absolutely, Dario. He was brilliant when he broke into the team and the rumour had it that he detested the Reds but he was happy to go to them from Villa. I appreciate he was older but I always think of his body shape when he played for us compared with how he bulked up with the Reds. John Barnes was similar, much more lithe at Watford but bulked up at the Reds. Makes you wonder how they did it.

Superb player. When he was on the ball you didn't hope he would make things happen, you knew. Pleasure to have witnessed was gutted when he left.

That is true £1.5 M and we had to pay Chelsea £910,000 for Pat Nevin at a tribunal the same year, now I liked Nevin but he wasn't as good as Trevor Steven to say the least.

McMahon was on £300 per week at Everton, at the same time David Johnson and Adrian Heath were on £900 per week, I
believe Howard Kendall offered Stevie a paltry rise which Stevie didn't accept, maybe Howard wanted to sell McMahon in
order to get the money to buy Trevor Steven, I know there was no love lost between Stevie and Howard.

The meeja went to great lengths a few weeks ago to say that there was nothing wrong on the goal against us where... Who was it.... Headed stek 's arm while he had both hands on the ball and despite the clear foul, the goal was given.
Andy Gray headed that goal at the same time the keepers hands touched it : and he contacted the ball, not the hands. Clear goal.
Now on to 1966....
