Thanks for the Bratislava trip. We originally planned to do Bratislava and Vienna in July, then Mrs blueloon said we should do Munich with a day trip to Salzburg , that worked out very well , both great places. Only snag was I said we didn’t need our passports on the day drip to Saltzburg , the border police who boarded the train on the way back had a different view, we got away with a stern “ Next time .” All the Germans had ID cards, my driving license didn’t cut it but was better than Mrs bl’s who was preparing to offer photos of our cats on the basis of what could be more genuinely British than that 🙂
Yes, it's worth repeating for those who haven't been much lately that it is illegal in many (most?) European countries not to have an official ID with photo on your person (not just when you are crossing a border). Of course, most have it on their phones these days. And border controls are imposed randomly even within the Schengen area these days. (As you discovered, there were strong controls between Austria and Germany after the new German government got in, which seem to have relaxed a bit now.)

If travelling to Thailand do be careful of the famous ladyboys. They are far more difficult to spot than you might think. After one particular night out in Bangkok I hooked up with said individual and could not for the life of me tell the difference. Everything was going swimmingly. She looked like a girl, felt like a girl, even kissed like a girl. It was only when she took me back to her place and reversed the car onto the drive first go that I thought, Hang on a minute……😮

I actually quite liked Bratislava when I visited. Its not huge, the old town is certainly compact, but I quite liked the beer scene there and the feel of a lived city.

Vienna is stunning, though. We did a day trip there and went around a few museums.

Next sunday we are off on our first holiday of the year, to Tenerife, one of my favourite detinations for walking and relaxing. The reports in recent weeks about delays with the ID system on arrival at Tenerife South have not been good, has anybody been through lately that can confirm (or deny) this is the case?

Will much depend on how many non-Schengen flights are arriving at about your arrival time. Go onto the airport arrivals online. This should give you an idea.

Has anyone been to Vancouver? My friend moved over there last year so gonna stay with him. I'm going on Friday and going to be there for 10 days. I'll have 8 full days for activities. I have a few things planned but any recommendations would be appreciated. Hoping to watch Everton v Burnley while I'm over there but the Vancouver Evertonians Facebook page doesn't seem very active. I'm planning on a day trip to Whistler, gonna watch the Whitecaps in the MLS and the Canucks in the ice hockey. Will be spending time in Stanley Park as well, of course. Bit different to the Stanley Park that I'm used to!

I went to Almeria recently, obviously not Tenerife but Spain all the same, and it was a pain. Entered various data etc. at a first terminal and then directed to a second to scan passport and confirm and the computer said no. Had to join a massive queue to have passport checked manually 🤷‍♂️

Just got back from New York Saturday morning.....massive snow storms have now grounded every flight, I've touched lucky with the weather.

Unreal city NYC, but was so disappointed with the food, its utter tripe, processed greasy garbage.

Several times. Beautiful city.
If you have access to a car, you might want to check out Capilano (sp?) Suspension Bridge Park. Quite the spot.

The botanical gardens was great though I’d imagine this isn’t the time of year for it.

One caveat: there was this huge area of drug addicts that I happened upon last time I was there. Your friend could probably help you steer clear of it— I’m not sure the exact location but it was adjacent to some nice areas

Came back from Iceland yesterday. Loved the place, it's absolutely empty!

Asked about Gylfi, he plays for the current league champions over there

Off to Naples and Ischia in June.

Obviously going to try and see some footy murals etc in Naples, but any recs, much appreciated
If you haven’t been before and have an interest in Roman history/archaeology, I’d highly recommend visiting Pompeii. Quite a thing to experience.

Also, the Vesuvius NP has some great hikes.
