£28m on Lukaku, £4m on Besic, loan fee for Atsu, signing on fee for Barry... but the money ALONE is not a reliable indicator.

We could have bough Cleverley *shudder* for the £8m some websites were suggesting - would that equal a "better" window? How about £16m on Welbeck? Either of those purchases would have raised our net spend, but each would have been utterly moronic purchases.

Spending intelligently is better than spending big - just look at Man Utd ffs. The only thing we could have done better this time around is loaned in a Coleman clone (very hard to find) and dumped Alcaraz in favour of someone like Nastasic or Richards, again on loan.

I agree with this yes.

Bill and his boys have played an absolute blinder here.

No, just realistic. He has held the club back for years but did anyone expect us to spend any money without selling first?

Also I guess the fact we have got all of our best players on new long term contracts means nothing does it? Just need a new deal for Mirallas now and we have all our best players tied down and as strong a squad as we have had in ages. Guess that is all by luck though.

B+ - we spent real live money this year and sold no one of concequence.

Yes we are weak in the back but I'm finding it hard to believe that Distin/Jags have gotten bad overnight. Plus Stones/Alcaraz backing them up is a pretty good option if one of them has lost the plot.

Its an A if we resign Mirallas, who unfortunately will probably command Walcott money on the open market.

Like i said. Bill and his boys have played an absolute blinder here.

You forgetting all the other windows mate. Out of fear of turning this into a board bashing, i will leave it.

Not forgetting anything, it was because of that I never expected us to do what we have here. Be happy we have a decent squad and enjoy the ride.

I don't think you understand the ' are you forgetting all the other windows '. Just because we have NET spent THIS SUMMER ..... doesn't mean we have actually NET spent in theory.

..... and yes, i will enjoy the ride. COYB

Considering how much of our spend was funded with prior player sales, and the huge amounts of TV money, I'm a little disappointed we didn't spend more. We went out and spent a load on Rom and that was a fantastic move, but after him our most expensive signing was Besic, who cost a measly £4m.

Up front and in central midfield we've strengthened though, to the point where those positions have gone from lacking depth to having excellent depth. I'm disappointed that we didn't sign a playmaker type, with Pienaar and Ross being injured, only Naismith and Osman can play off the striker. Unless the plan is for Atsu to play there. I just don't see that as a good enough array of options, even in spite of Naismith's excellent form.

We look strong on the wings, with Mirallas, McGeady and hopefully Atsu all providing quality options who each bring something different. However Pienaar's injury does put a strain on our depth in this department, and I'd hate to see us having to use Osman there.

At the back, people were no doubt kneejerking massively. I do think John Stones should get a chance but he is on the books, and probably the best 3rd choice CB we've had in years. Alcaraz gets stick but providing we're not playing pacey, counterattacking sides I think he's competent. Distin will have a good season again, I'm sure, the question marks are only over Jagielka. If he can't ungashify himself, Bobby needs to put Stones in and sign another CB in January.

If Coleman gets an injury, we're buggered, which makes me wonder why we didn't go for Alderweireld? Available on loan, covering RB and CB very well. Bizarre. Otherwise though, I think we're well stocked. Robles is a solid enough number 2 -- only Chelsea can boast 2 excellent keepers, and they're going to struggle to keep the 2nd happy. LB is a very strong position, up front there is genuine competition which is very encouraging; it took a long time for us to sign a quality striker, so to now have 2 on the books is just brilliant stuff. Besic and Gibson will provide competition and depth in midfield, and we still have a few young players who might get chances. Finally, Barkley/Kone/Oviedo should return at some point and that will be a big boost.

So all in all, B+ from me. We spent big for possibly the first time, but this was somewhat let down by the fact that we spent little else, in spite of the huge spike in income. Bobby addressed the problems we had at the start of the window, but perhaps let himself down by failing to address the ones we had at the end. Whether he'll be proven right or wrong will depend on injuries and form, but with a vicious European group and an already rubbish start to the season, we've got a lot of work ahead of us and a lot of reasonable doubt about what we can actually achieve.

A - we can only compare this window to our own windows of the past. Some people on here would do well to remember the not so distant past.

Ok so 1st team wise we signed Lukaku, Besic, Barry and Eto'o, loaned Atsu and renewed the contracts of Barkley, Coleman, McCarthy and Stones. Pfft by our standards that's a sick window I don't care how old Distin is.

The best thing about this window is what it reveals for the future. If we can sign/renew all these players and not lose any of significance then we should be able to continue the improvements over future windows.

IMO this is our best window of the PL era.

My overall grade in early August was A- based on

Keeping the manager & important players from last season = A
Giving the academy players a chance and adding to our U21s for the furture = A
Building on last years squad with senior additions = C
Besic looks a fantastic purchase at a bargain price but he's the only one so far.

Since then we've brought Eto'o, loaned Atsu & Henen and sold Duffy raising it to an A

Was sad to see Duffy go - if we had replaced him with Gomez, brought in temporary cover for RB and signed Cleverley/Holtby cheaply it would have been A+.

putting the bad start off the season aside, how boss are we now?!
years ago we would never of dreamed of signing someone like the likes off Lukaku / Eto. even
if he's aged he's a big name all over the world, before the season i dont think many were mentioning
signing a cb, but we have been poor at the start hopefully that will improve although another one would off been great.. besic can also play there too? but soppose
cant judge seem as no ones seen him there in a big league yet
, /rb .. but i dont think martinez is nieve enough to start hibbert in big games if colemans injured would expect barry? wouldnt be too bad

Kennedy , Browning , Lundstram all have decent potential sent out on loan , good for the youngsters
bit gutted about duffy not making it but hopefully he does turn in to the player we all expected off him
through the years.

for once i actually dont care how much money bills pocketed im proud of this window some peoples
hard too please just turned 21 not seen the great squads we had back in the past and this has too be
the most exciting squad since then

A - think loans similar to the ones we had last year and even a rb
even though im kind off contradicting myself on what ive said would
of made us had a special season, not saying we cant still if we do what
were capable off

It's fair to say so far that the mood has shifted down a bit, away from As to Bs.

Understandable, I suppose.
