I think ours has been largely good, but we still lack cover for Coleman. No-one else in the squad can play RB like he does.

No one else in the world can play right back like our Seamus.
New thread or not, it's still an A- from me.

I dunno if anyone is denying that eventually there's a need at CB but we've got a bunch of young CBs. did you want us to sign sergio ramos or something?

Evertonians generally set too low a bar for these carpet baggers to jump over. They've failed to back this squad for 15 years, a big(ish) net spend in one summer doesn't mask that.

The thing is, that's board talk and we've been trying to change them for years & years. Bill & the rest of them aren't going anywhere in a hurry so I'm basing my A- grade on an EFC transfer window under the current board.

I'm guessing that if we ever outspend Man City & Chelsea over 3 years then we won't have a former Corrie actor bankrolling us.

It's not 'the backline' it's the doubts around the CB unit...doubts that were raised even last season because they were woeful from set pieces...and now they're woeful in outfield play.

Keep denying we have to strengthen there, and keep watching our defence as a whole deteriorate.
A couple of very good points there. There is a possibility that Jags and Distin are both going to require replacing in the first XI at the same time - we all thought Jags would outlast Distin by a couple of seasons, but recent evidence now suggests otherwise. We don't want to be bedding in a new CB pairing where John Stones is forced to play alongside someone just as young and inexperienced as he is.

Fast forward eighteen months from now: Distin may have retired and Jags may be our experinced bench option - who will be playing alongside Stones? It won't be Alcaraz because he's old, slow and mince. Is Galloway really going to be prem-ready in less than two years?

I have to say though and i'm not sure if this has been brought up: For the first time in god knows how many windows, not once was i worrying about one of our lads pissing off to another team. Not once !! Didn't even enter my head. Not only that but there was not one team who could even be arsed approaching us for a player. Teams know that we're not pissing around anymore and are trying to build something here.

If anything i think this speaks volumes in itself. We might not of signed anyone yesterday, nor was i that arsed to be honest but the simple fact that yesterday i didn't see one comment on these boards that was suggesting we were shipping someone out. Every window for years we have dreaded this and usually when the window closes, a huge sigh of relief can be heard for miles.

Lets just think about this for a second. Like last season at this very same time, our season starts here lads. Is right !

I agree with you, it is, relative to other Everton transfer windows, unusually good.

The devil is in the detail though: it hasn't been a massive show of intent in the context of Martinez's time here. When all is said and done it is a net spend of roughly £18M over three transfer windows. £6M per window when the club has been getting an extra £30M in through the door from tv revenue.

I've said B- because we are bristling with attacking intent now and we kept hold of our players. But the defence needed sorting - that's not kneejerk after the Chelsea hammering, that's been stated well before the season started. RB cover and a decent CB cover.

When Everton are the third highest net spenders over a few seasons, then there'll be something to shout about. Take out the money saved from player sales just last season alone and that tells you all you need to know how much of the annual £30M windfall that'll be spent in years to come.

So you moan when we don't spend money and then when we do you moan even more.

You must have a miserable home life if all you ever do is look at negative things.

What money have we spent mate ?
£28m on Lukaku, £4m on Besic, loan fee for Atsu, signing on fee for Barry... but the money ALONE is not a reliable indicator.

We could have bough Cleverley *shudder* for the £8m some websites were suggesting - would that equal a "better" window? How about £16m on Welbeck? Either of those purchases would have raised our net spend, but each would have been utterly moronic purchases.

Spending intelligently is better than spending big - just look at Man Utd ffs. The only thing we could have done better this time around is loaned in a Coleman clone (very hard to find) and dumped Alcaraz in favour of someone like Nastasic or Richards, again on loan.

God only knows why we were wasting time pursuing Cleverley *shudder* when we should have been hijacking Fiorentina's move for Richards.
