Even though Delap is injured or he was, I wanted him for our club. He was what I saw as a perfect fit at that time. He was no Isak or anyone of that caliber. He was being relegated. He was offered full time football at Everton as a starter. He declined. He was okay riding the bench for Chelsea rather than joining our rebuild project.

So it’s not that we spent our money poorly. We simply weren’t attractive enough to draw the interest of world class strikers and backs. We have to win consistently to do that.

The reason I think our transfer window was a success is because for the most part we got the best player available to fill a great many of the holes left vacated.

The big clubs can be upset by the one that got away but not us. It was never going to be a competition between a top striker or RB going to us or the RS. Or us and Chelsea. No way. We were competing for what was left after the big teams had their fill. We just aren’t there yet.

We had the biggest net transfer window for a decade in the summer - net spend of £95M.

We went into the window with CF, RW and RB as THE positions to solve.

After spending well over £100M we emerged from it with only the RW position filled - although we only look fluid when we have Ndiaye out there who we had already and accommodating Grealish in his old position.

RB is no further on; CF is arguably worse.

I think we're now in a position to declare that summer window as encouraging from a spending / ambition point of view, but an utter disaster in terms of getting us a highly competitive first team.

I look on it as a work in progress. We have so many holes that we need to fill in the squad it was always going to be a multi window job.

I do agree there are some glaring positions we should have done something about, but we have also picked up some good players and do look a better side than we have for a good long while.

Spot on Mister J, this season is about consolidation whilst we keep improving the squad bit by bit. It's refreshing that we didn't panic buy in the summer for a change as we all know how hard it is to offload dross on high wages

I think he would have been a great fit but it wasn't meant to be. I don't think the striker market was ever ours to really take. We are absolute madmen for not getting a RB in. That is something we could have actually addressed. Even a loan would have been something. It should not have been Tete or bust.

Kinnear - do me a favour this is on Moyes and no one else.

We could have solved EASILY at lthe very least the FB positions...especially RB.

The club spent over £100M and RB was a stand out to be fixed but wasn't.

How you’re ignoring the left back situation when we’ve arguably got the worse one in the league is a strange one.

I'd say we could and should have done the same decent business (Grealish in on loan; KDH; Alcaraz under contract) for about £40M.

We've effectively seen about £60M thrown down the toilet...as it stands right now in any case.

I do think we have to look at some of the results and start questioning how wisely we allocated the spending.

We have a striker and full back the manager won't use. An attacking midfielder who he doesn't trust to start. Our largest outlay was on a young lad who also isn't trusted to start.

I'm leaving Rohl out of it as a late arrival but the fact that we spent what we did and only KDH and a loaned Grealish have come into the team is underwhelming to say the least.

Dibling - not the direct player we needed

Just those three we look to have blown £60M on.

Alcaraz and Grealish and KDH are the successes...and we already knew Alacaraz would be able to do a reasonable job.


To me, that's at best a 5/10 transfer window.

That cash spent on Barry, Aznou and Dibling - spent well - could and should have solved our goal scoring issues and RB issue.

They may still come good with time but it's disappointing the three you have listed here haven't been able to have any real impact on the first team.
