If we can't raise the cash for Moutinho, I can't see us raising an equal amount for Riera. Think this is another of the:

"Aim for the stars.. just to show our fans we are connected to big name targets"

But is there not a 8m differance. As moutinho was 20m+ where this fella is 12m. If you believe the papaers that is:lol:

Predictible move this - supporters are up in arms, it's a matchday, so the club send out the message they're atempting to smash the transfer record to take the edge off the situation.

I think we all know this story will fade after the game against WBA.

Everton have made a move to beat rivals Liverpool to the signing of Spanish international Albert Riera, skysports.com understands.

Reports across England and Spain revealed Everton's interest in the winger and it is now understood that talks are at an advanced stage.
Everton are ready to agree terms with Espanyol - something their city rivals Liverpool have been unable to do.

The Toffees seem prepared to pay £12million for Riera, which is better than Liverpool's package which is believed to have included Andrei Voronin in exchange.

Everton are yet to sign any players this summer, but Riera could represent a big breakthrough for manager David Moyes after failed bids for Joao Moutinho and Tiago.

Riera's arrival on the left would also give Moyes the opportunity to reshuffle his midfield - as the likes of Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar could then be moved across into the centre or right of midfield.

Espanyol are now considering the deal although they are also considering the sale of Luis Garcia - and may not be willing to sell both their prized assets, but Everton are hoping their straight cash bid will persuade the Barcelona outfit to do business.

To be fair Dave, reading between the lines of the ssn report I would say we've been working on this potential move for more than a couple of days, considering how long we normally mull and ponder for players. Interestingly Riera was linked with Spurs at the beginning of December last year amidst talk his contract expires in 2009-talk at the time of a new contract being muted-however no links to a new contract being signed in the meantime so next 9 days possibly last chance for Espanyol to get a fee for the player before he can negotiate a Bosman in January. Maybe just maybe this will be signing number one(y)

Riera?

Suddenly this lad who couldn't cut it at City and plays for a second rate Spanish club is to be the saviour?

I know we're desperate, but surely we must have some level of realism left?

He's not even a proper international - 6 caps. 26 yo, as a winger that's only 3 or 4 years left at the top, no sell on value.

If this move is true it is a waste of money. Make this guy Everton's RECORD signing? You have got to be kidding.

Agree with you. Not just because of the WBA game needing a cookie to throw to pissed off fans though. For the last few weeks we've had a pattern of Weekend rumours that lead us to Monday/Tuesday of crossed finger optimism and finally the trail goes cold. Then we start all over again. C'mon people - as the saying goes 'Fool me once , shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.' We're heading for fool me 20 times this summer.

If Liverpool are interested , we won't be signing him. If they can't do a deal, why would you believe for 1 minute our delegation of world class numpties would be able to based on track record.

Spot on! If you look on You tube you wouldn't pay anywhere near their asking price. He doesn't go past any players, misses when he shoots and can't play a pass unless it is backwards. He should fit in perfectly.
