Even Villa had been in decline for years when they went. It wasn't just a bad season, rather the culmination of 3-4 bad ones hitting them. The season they dropped it just felt like they ran out of fight and gave up.You could see Leeds and Newcastle coming a mile off, due to the mad boom or bust financial models that they were operating at the time, so I don`t think they were that much of a shock tbh.
Villa to me was the bigger one.
I know Spurs finished 17th last year, but most people brushed that off as an injury hit team focusing on Europe. That obviously wasn't the whole story, they are just that bad.
