Top 4 ?

We would need to win 5 out of 6 games realistically. I don’t think we have a run like that in us. We have a fair shot at the minor comps though if 7th is good enough. If Chelsea lose though it opens it up again. If Chelsea win tonight it is all over for the RS IMO.

5th gets champions league if City/Chelsea win the champions league. Think we should be aiming for that 5th spot so we want Chelsea to win today.

Unfortunately that is incorrect. Chelsea would get a Champions League place for finishing 5th and winning it. However a team from top 4 winning does not create an extra place for their league.
Correct. There is actually a permutation that would result in 4th not qualifying for the CL

No 4th would still qualify providing that the Europa winners aren't also from England and also outside the top 5. If Arsenal play United in Europa final and City play Chelsea in the Champions League final the only combination of results that would take the 4th place team out is if both Chelsea and Arsenal win and finish outside the top 4. Any other combination would create a 5th place for English league.

From BBC website:
The top four in the Premier League usually qualify for the Champions League group stages - but this season it is quite conceivable that fourth place will not be enough.

The winners of the Champions League and Europa League automatically qualify for the Champions League group stages - and there can only be a maximum of five English teams in Europe's top competition.

So if Chelsea win the Champions League and Arsenal win the Europa League (both are in the semi-finals) - and both finish outside the top four (as is very possible) - they will be joined in the Champions League by the top three in the Premier League.

That would mean fourth place would only be enough for a Europa League group spot next season.

That matches what I said.

While a draw would have been ideal IMHO, with a win against Villa next week we move into a tie for 5th. That would leave us 3 behind Chelsea with 5 matches to go. And Chelsea still have to play Man City, LCFC and Arsenal along with several cup games.

Six back with a game in hand. Six to play. Hellish fixture congestion. Villa reeling. Arguably, so are we.

Still have control of our own destiny for fifth.

Hard to see top 4. If we win out, we need Chelsea to fail to get a result twice. If we deliver the 2011-2012 Wigan great escape, we need a Chelsea loss on top of that.
