I have tried to balance that and not go too overboard in my praise of him. There are obviously examples of where he could have given more young players opportunities. I also think in particular games, like blueblue has mentioned we could have seen more young players used in particular games like FA Cup games. I'd have liked to have seen Pennington a bit more involved and would be much happier with him at right back for the derby than Connolly that's for sure.
However I don't think the facts lie. Dowell, Ledson, Davies, Browning, Pennington, Connolly, Galloway, Garbutt have all been give first team debuts by him. Alongside that Stones, Barkley, Lukaku & Deulofeu have been made into first team regulars. I think that's quite favourable, particular when compared to a lot of premier league managers. Stones and Barkley were a million miles away from first team regulars before Martinez arrived.
It could certainly be better though, and I'd like to see a De Boer type manager come in as he would continue this. However for Davies I do worry if a more conservative manager comes in as I think it would stunt his development.
While this is true, i would wait until we see how many appearances he gets to make before we make that assessment, his development in terms of first team football could go the same way now as under a new manager, Davies might go out on loan next season and we might not get to see him again under martinez.
He has form for this both here and wigan and swansea, while some of the youngsters should have been included in the squad considering some of the ageing players who are going to end up leaving, i think there is along way to go before we can say Martinez has been a better solution for the lad.
Martinez likes to buy young players, in my opinion. Barkley, Stones, Del and Lukaku while all had to be given a chance by Martinez - i think the majority of managers would have done the same. People saying
Moyes had Barkley out on loan, he also had other players on loan which came in for him.
Moyes also gave a massive amount of young players their debuts.
In my opinion, for us to say that martinez is good at promoting youth and backing up his words about our "golden generation", they really should have been played in other competitions mixed with older heads. We know we have some good youngsters, some will make it some won't - but the one thing ill say is we have a couple that could have had a impact this season - no fear not known and hungry, but they haven't been given an opportunity.
When these players play 10 league games for the club, then ill be thinking he is interested in our youth and promoting from within. I realise you agree with a lot of what i am saying there hahaha, just wanted to balance that while the grass isn't always greener - when the grass has turned brown it is sometimes better to jump the fence!!
