Tom Cleverley

He's on a free and some people are saying no?? He's still young, has Pl and International experience, is energetic and keeps things nice and simple. His short quick passing keeps the game moving but that gets overlooked as he doesnt do anything fancy. I think Martinez would like a high tempo pressing style but Gibson, Osman and Barry dont have the legs.

The same people turning their noses up at him are the same ones who said Barry was [Poor language removed] and oh yes, McCarthy was [Poor language removed] too.

If he signs then im convinced he will prove people wrong, if not sell him to someone after a year and make a profit.

Meh, he's a player Martinez obviously wants. Thought he looked decent in a poor Villa side at the weekend. I think he's a player who, in the right team, can dictate tempo very well.

Happy enough if true, although I'd prefer Delph on a free instead.
This.

Cleverley on a free is acceptable. All this chat in the summer of paying between £4m and £8m was alarming, but if he comes in on a free and we can sell someone else (not a starting XI player) for a decent sum, then fair enough. It's essentially the same as the Lucas Neill scenario.

But I too think Delph is the better player.

I really don't think you can grumble if we signed cleverley on a free transfer!

He may never be no world beater but he'd certainly be a usefull squad addition. When McCarthy doesn't play we seem to lose the legs in midfield.

Barry can't go on for ever, Osman is on his last legs, Gibson injured a lot....

Makes sense IMO. And even if he was poor, you'd still get 4-5M off a hull or simlar!!

Wow....the moaning.

An international player who (regardless of what some forum 'experts' say) is actually quite neat and tidy and F-R-E-E.

He definitely wanted to join in summer. This was confirmed in a recent Roy Keane interview, he mentioned trying to convince Lambert on deadline day to drop his chase if his heart wasn't in the Villa move.

Played under Martinez at Wigan, can play more than one role.

I really can't see Barry seeing out his 3 year deal. Maybe next summer, deffo the one after will see him off to the US. Between Besic, McCarthy, Barkley and Cleverley we will have a load of international caps with an average age of about 23. That will do me.

He's only an international because he plays for united though. You think he'd have got capped by England if he played for say west brom these years? Which is coincidentally about his level.

What an utter moronic remark.
I think if Naismith doesn't sign a new contract on the manager's terms that's exactly what will happen.

I have a feeling Naismith and his agent may be pushing for more than what's being offered on the strength of goals scored and an upturn in form. Doing a deal for Cleverly in advance of the summer (if it's true) reinforces Martinez's bargaining position.

He's a tidy footballer, everyone can surely see that.

He just needs a bit of confidence along with a little push to demand the ball more, take more risks and be more positive. Martinez is the man for that, so I'd be happy with this.

Delph's also possibly on a free and that would be great, but I can see him going to Arsenal.

I think youve put 2+2 together and got 40 million as per usual.

The manager simply commented they weren't looking at contracts right now as they had games to focus on.

I'm not worried. Despite your nonsense.

That's all part of the dance.

*sigh*

Deal agreed for the summer.

Free transfer.

I'd be happy enough to see Cleverley join us and given we all know Martinez rates him, it wouldn't be a huge surprise
He'll be out of contract though so the pedant in me would just call him "free" and leave out the word "transfer".
