I hate this bullshine of 'protecting' players.

If the other team boots hell out of the same player all game then give fouls, book them or send them off based on the severity/frequency of fouls and nothing else. Teams taking cards and stuff to put a player off their game is a snide but valid tactic - if that player can't take it then he shouldn't be out there.
