Leicester for CL? Would be a great story.

Has there ever been an unfancied club making top 4 since the Champs League era? Ipswich managed 5th in the mid-90's, some might say us in 2005, but we're often thereabouts anyway. Leeds did it one year but they were fancied back then.

Plenty of non-glamour clubs have teased with rocking starts but they all fall away soon enough.

It was only top top two in the mid nineties, Doc.....and Newcastke and Bkackburn played in it then as well as Leeds.

It was actually when they made it top four round about the turn of the century that they ruined it.

They diluted the quality of the European Cup.

They sucked the cream from the UEFA Cup.

And they done away with the Cup Winners Cup.

In the process they ruined the EPL's strength in depth and sounded the death knell for the F.A. Cup Final as the highlight of the English football year.

True and very, very disheartening especially for the 'magic' of the FA Cup that has largely gone.

oh aye...i also reckon Man Utd's boycott of the Cup that one year was a deathknell...also that winning it only qualifies the club for the 2nd-Tier Euro tournament. Tho' I remember reading somewhere they're considering changing this to Champs League qualification?

The FA diminished the FA Cup by sending Manchester United off to Brazil to help England's chances of winning the bid for the 2006 World Cup.

The FA's recent treatment of the competition has also diminished it. But for me, the FA Cup will always be special.

The idea that winning the fa cup only has merit if you get in the cl on the back of it is the whole problem.

I think the bigger problem is the 'Champions' League offering places to clubs who weren't champions of their respective leagues.

I'd go back to classic knock-out, only League Champions need apply. The Europa League would stay but would include all clubs who won their domestic cups or finished 2nd-6th (depending on their co-efficient).

We'd have two cracking European tournaments that way, and the FA Cup wouldn't feel as diminished by it.

EDIT: tho' sadly money dictates: who'd want to be champions if it means playing less Euro games on the telly?
