....I was concerned that performance of our Champions League clubs would result in them concentrating on League Cup. However, they still have some games to go and will not give up on qualifying for the next stage. Also, a couple might end up in Europa League.

I reckon he realised if he can't score an open goal under no pressure from 8 yards out he's not going to beat the keeper from 12 yards today with everyone watching.
