i thought exactly what shearer said there. anywhere else on the pitch and the ref always brings it back for a foul, i still don't know if there's a ruling on it. You see defenders clearing it 70 yards in the last minute and a striker sticks out a leg to try and block the clearance, the defender always kicks out at that foot and dives to win a free kick and run down the clock. In these instances they're not free kicks because it's a dive, but when the striker follows through, with the ball 70 yards up the field when he catches him, is it a foul? if someone kicks someone off the ball, the ref doesn't run to the spot and give a free kick where the incident happens.

so how long after the ball has gone does a ref deem it not to be relevant to the play?
