England haven't lacked depth in such volume for quite some time. It's a hangover left from the awkward and overly long transition from the old guard of Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand and the likes...if they had fallen on their swords when they realised it wasn't working, we might have had time to build a fresh squad and go through that miserable period before we got to the World Cup.

Like Germany did, really. But then, their FA isn't blind.
