Way back when it used to be about class with FK Austria being more bourgeois and Rapid more working class.
The derby used to be a lot friendlier, I can't tell you what made it so heated and vicious in the last 2, 3 decades. Could be down to significant sections of the organized support being more on the Hooligan than on the Ultra side.
The rumours are that Rapid's organized support is being taken over more and more by an especially radical group called "Lords". On Sunday, they also brought some Hooligans from Panathinaikos with them who were clearly only there to cause trouble.
FK Austria also had a very radical element in their organized support but luckily they are being pushed out more and more and this especially showed at the derby. Less hate and destruction for others, more love and support for their own club.
