In general it's probably a lucky/random/coin toss thing.

Yes...the last time Liverpool finished 2nd they got Bayern (away 2nd leg)

Not that it really matters as they'll manage to pull themselves through regardless of the opposition, but looking like a very daunting set of teams that the RS could be paired with in the next round. Obviously they'll end up with Porto like and win 15-0 on aggregate.
