He was one of the best players in the world for about ten years, and arguably the smartest player in the world. He is now, sadly, past it. His smarts keep him going, but he's certainly nowhere near what he was: which was utterly world-class. In the normal German course of events, he would have been retired by a brand new generation pushing out the old after the 2018 World Cup. His continued presence is similar to that of Lothar Matthäus in 2000. An indictment of the younger generation.
