I always found it strange how they dominated so much in England which we are constantly told is the worlds toughest league but couldn't replicate the success in Europe.

Twas. So what? United being a big name but average was the norm, outside of 2 managers. Its not a dig, just an observation that many English footie fans remember those normal days of what United were. If they unearth another genius, then their financial fire power will pretty much guarantee success.
