That Belgium side can't be called the golden generation now, look at the side its not even very good
For an international team it is still quite good. De Bruyne is a top 5 or 10 player in the world, Rom a top 5 striker, Carrasco, Courtois, Witsel, both Hazards, Meunier, Alderweireld are all still regulars in sides that play in Europe, and the rest that fill it out like Trossard and Denayer aren't in bad sides. It's a real failure to not win anything.

player for player its comfortably the best team they have ever had so I think its fair to call it a golden generation, golden generation doesn't garauntee winning anything though.

I think Belgium's chances went with Kompany. Hazard's form going off a cliff didn't help, either.

De Bruyne can't do it all on his own.

If we accept that point, then it is an indictment of Martinez's management that they are less than the sum of their part and certainly less than the greatest ever Belgian side that got to the final of Euro 80 and the semi-final of Mexico 86. Along the way, they beat the World Cup holders Argentina in 1982.

I would argue that Jean-Marie Pfaff, Eric Gerets, Enzo Scifo, and Jan Cuelemans would walk into the current Belgian side - and that Frankie Vercautern would easily be worth his place too. As for Guy Thys, well, Roberto could lay his cones.
