Everything I read said he left, despite signing a new deal in September he felt he had taken the players as far as he could.

There were strong rumours in January that he could be fired, so it could be one of those "mutual" decisions. The new manager is from the Jorge Mendes stable which appears to be the only thing I can find that explains why Wolves would hire him.
