Tbh I was quite happy with the postponement last night considering so many games in the last 18 days, all the quality players unavailable and the rest running on empty, we would have had to heavily rotate too, God knows what sort of side we'd have had out. The problem at City and short notice did raise concerns but almost certainly the correct action taken considering the following, cancel first and worry about the proper procedure later............
Newcastle had 19 positive tests, among staff and players, during their worrying period at the start of the month and the after-effects continue to cause serious problems for team selection and preparation with two players suffering longer term effects and one likely to be out for another month. When it's remembered that that was the less virulent and transmissible strain of the virus and they only cancelled one game although closing their training ground for ten days any similar outbreak with the highly contagious strain is that much more worrying.
The fact that Man City had recently stayed in London, this new strain is now sweeping the country, Sheff United have revealed multiple positive tests and medical staff at stricken Rochdale plus numerous other lower division sides have questioned the advisability of football continuing right now, then any breach of a Covid secure bubble at a prem club with the new strain becoming predominant is massively worrying, far more than with Newcastle. Cancel games and worry about the protocols and correct procedure afterwards, not the other way around is my attitude.
The new mutant strain that initially caused such huge concern in the south east and is now rapidly spreading all over England is a worry for the game’s governing bodies and it's not going away fast, all clubs are likely to be hit, this new version is far more contagious and transmits far more easily.
