I mean the US national team is regularly drawing players out of there and I'm not sure that would be happening if the perception was that it is essentially lower level championship.

That’s because US Soccer cares more about promoting MLS than being internationally competitive. It would be like if the Netherlands tried to get their entire national team to play in the Eredivisie, utter madness. I think we’re very aware that MLS is not high quality and our best players are better off playing club football abroad against better competition if we ever want to make a serious run at the World Cup.
