Our Southampton home game on July 9th is on Amazon and nominally free to air.
Amazon have made it available on the prime app or on the streaming service Twitch, so not even on YouTube. Not many will be that bothered to stream or get a prime app downloaded to watch - if not already a prime member, making it as inconvenient as possible imo.
Far too much messing about for many, predict negligible viewing figures even though 'nominally' free to air.
A very real possibility it could set a new record for the lowest ever viewing figures for a premier league fixture that has been screened free to air, although Amazon's other 'free to air' offerings could easily make that record a tall order to achieve

Loads of people did that at Christmas when they first showed PL games.

No it's not a huge ask at all but when you're talking likely viewing figures it's certainly enough to lower them significantly because it takes more than just switching over in the remote and for that you need the entertainment in offer to be enough to make it worthwhile.
For the committed fan, sure they'll do it but for the average punter who may have just flicked over, of course not.

Those without a smart TV or Amazon stick, and that's still a sizeable (the majority) proportion, could stream very easily, but would more than likely then have to watch on the computer or android - which just isn't either as easy or enjoyable as just switching over to another TV channel, it just isn't.
Even YouTube is more accessible to more TVs (via some sky subscriptions or similar) than the Amazon app which can be added but only standard to (most, easily added if not) smart TVs.
There is one reason only why they've chosen to not negotiate with a free to air channel or YouTube and it's to try and get as many non amazon prime members to download their Amazon prime app in the hope they see all their marketing and are subsequently persuaded to pay their subscription fees for prime - pure marketing reasons.

It's not a problem at all for me, but then that's the whole point really, I as a fan would be prepared to do something more than just switch over but as I have a smart TV with the prime app on it is just as easy anyway.
The whole point is an awful lot (the vast majority by a massive margin - possibly 90% of the tv viewing audience) will not be that interested in Everton Vs Southampton anyway and anything that requires more effort to watch than just using the remote would almost certainly be enough to persuade them to give it a miss.
In effect it won't be comparable to having it free to air on a TV channel at all, as some (a small proportion, but in terms of their likely viewing figures, a big percentage) of those only half interested (at best) may turn over to have s look if it was.
