Step one in building a team is having a plan of what team you want to build. The only teams that have done that in recent years (and had the money to win with the plan) are the RS, City, Spurs under Poch for awhile and Chelsea under Conte. Everyone else can't even get past step one. They just throw money around and try to fit together whatever they end up with.

I'm hoping Arteta has a plan, he's certainly talking a good game so far just hope he can get the right players in. No more Luiz type transfers, younger hungrier mire technical players that can run all day.

I think he does but sticking to it is the key. Martinez had a plan here but it started failing and he lost conviction. Koeman never had one. Marco might have originally but it was a bad plan that only worked because of Gana. There can be bad plans but not having one is worse.

Martinez had a plan, but then when he had got us to within touching distance of the top four he changed it and went to try and dominate possession instead.

He had many flaws in the end, but at the very least for awhile it looked like he had a vision for the end product. I do wonder what Carlo has planned because at the minute it feels like we are just getting the best out of what's available. I'm curious to what kind of new signings he has in mind and where that goes.

Hopefully there is no plan, and that is all he is trying to do. We've suffered too much at the hands of people with plans.
