Has a points deduction ever been applied to a season that’s already finished? Usually it would apply to the following season or the current season if it’s in progress. Not that it would come to that anyway in all likelihood.

There is no danger of us being relegated. None at all. This is all about money for the owners of the club that goes down. The end result of all this could be that the Premier league choose to abandon rules like this due to the complex nature of them and the problems they cause. Personally I think that would be a good thing.

I'm not concerned about it but we could do without, at a time we are supposedly trying to finalise new sponsorship deals and increase commercial revenue more generally.

It serves a reminder that the way the club has been run has been an absolute disgrace.

We don't need to be better than everyone but if we are going to have unwanted scrutiny on our finances and finger-pointing, we could at least have clubs bitter over Champions League qualification and a few pots in the cabinet, rather than this.

Exactly. Nobody will be relegated in a courtroom. The league would collapse. Before you know it, you'd have Klopp representing himself in litigation against City's title win because Guardiola won the league with a false nine. What we are seeing now is two incompetent and terrified ownerships deflecting to shift the focus from their own mismanagement in the hope they might get a few quid to soften their coughs when the bills need to be paid on relegation.
