Time Wasting

Marinner had a great game. He will have been aware that this league would prefer Arsenal in the top 4 over the less media hyped Everton. So he did enough without being obvious to help the desired result unfold.

didn't mean it in an arrogant way that we should just expect to beat them, i meant it in the context of the season.....

we had 5 games to get champs league football, a dream prize....
Palace had 5 games to get 3 points to stay up...you could probably argue they were already safe before last night...

so last night we were playing against a weaker team, but also a team with less to gain from winning....it was an amazing opportunity last night for our players, and we couldn't do it....and if you don't grab an opportunity like that, you won't get champs league football (or,deserve it).....we've let Arsenal out of jail

So if Arsenal get beat by Hull, a team in a similar position to Palace and we beat Utd and go 4th again, does that mean Arsenal don't deserve CL next year then?

The point is these results happen to every team during a season, whether it's at the beginning, in the middle or the end. Who ever gets the most points deserves it, basing it on one individual games result is wrong.

If we are trying to blame the ref then do one lads tbh, fact is we got beaten by a palace who had a plan to do so, same as we had a plan to do arsneal, it worked, dust off get ready for sunday for uniteds visit, need 4 perfromances without diip now and hope arsenal think they have it now and relax and slip up

There's worlds of difference between 10 minutes to go and 22 minutes gone. It started literally as soon as they scored. If Speroni had had so much as a talking to by the half hour, that would have knocked it on the head. Totally understand it defending a lead within injury time, but they were properly trying it on. As far as the ref goes, the added time in the second half was for the two head injuries, not for Palace dithering.

On which note we didn't look like scoring in those wasted minutes anyway, so fair play to Palace that we couldn't break them down.

If we time waste on Sunday and disrupt Utds chances of winning then no one will complain, it happens in every game to a greater or lesser extent. As others have said the ref played 6 minutes added time, he's dealt with it whether he booked the keeper or not.

Only thing that should be done about any timewasting, by any team, is that, if you go one up and waste time in order to see a game out Time should be added on, you then concede two, all the time added for your antics should be wiped off.

Hmmm, these grapes taste a bit sour.

If were 1-0 up on Sunday and there's 10 minutes to go I'd expect the same, swings and roundabouts pal.

The fact that we lost last night doesn't come into this. I don't want other teams doing it and I don't want us doing it. The game would be better off without it. Similar to diving - everyone does it but it creates an uneven playing field.

Wow, and who's going to be responsible for doing that calculation?

I don't like how people just brush it off as being part of the game. It's a part of the game that should be stamped out. It's the referees who need to get a handle on it.

It just like diving. If someone dives you should book them, if they dive again then you should have the balls to give them a second yellow. Then they would soon stop it.

If a keeper starts time wasting (whether that's Palace's keeper or Tim Howard), then you book them. They do it again, you give them a second yellow. Then they would soon stop it.

If you don't take these measures then it becomes part of the game, and then everybody has to start doing it otherwise you become disadvantaged. Like Jarvis the other night, the pundits where saying he should have went to ground when he was fouled in the box...he shouldn't have to!

Dermot Gallgher has been calling for years to have basketball style timings for games.

35 minutes each half and stop the clock every time the ball goes out of play.

Everyone can see exactly how long is left then.

Makes sense really.

What is frustrating is at 1-2, when we scored we had our tails up, then keeper was down following the goal for 4-5 minutes. That was cheating to take the sting out of the game. And it worked as the crowd were quieter following the restart

Not disputing that we do it too (and I'd rather we didn't), but those 6 minutes were for the two head injuries, not for time wasting.

Similar thing happend when we got beat 0-1 by Stoke a few seasons ago. They scored the early goal, and began the time wasting game. Everytime we started to build up momentum, an inicident occurred and it was minutes before we got going again. Breaks up the game.

Not for one minute saying that Palace are like that Stoke team, I thought Palace looked quite good last night. But it is no suprise that Pulis is behind it all. He tells his players to take the sting out the game at any chance that they can, he tells the medical team too to take extra time. It's a game plan, and it can often work and give a team a slight advantage.

Time wasting didn't cause us to lose last night, not at all. But time wasting will help teams win occasionally. It's the inches you play for in football.
