The only ways to stop the level of time wasting we've seen from Huddersfield, Southampton and now highlighted about Cardiff is to either employ the 'stopping clock' as used in ice hockey or for referees to grow some kahonas and start booking players for it earlier in the game AND for them, in conjunction with the fourth official, to keep adding time on.
At half time they could then call the managers to their room and advise that any more persistent time wasting will result in further yellows and if necessary, red cards... as well as even more added on time.
Neither is likely to happen as the authorities won't agree to a stopping clock and officialdom in the game is too weak.

I don't like the idea of stopping the clock with the ball out of play. Players could use the time to slow the game when the pressure us against them, without sanction or booking. A game could just drag on for hours (like US football) and require ad breaks etc., crowds will miss trains etc..
There are perfectly good rules already in play that have stood the test if time - book time wasters. For those who find it absolutely necessary to meddle with the laws of a game that has spread the earth to popular affect over the last century, (because it seems, "today knows best") then give them 10s from when the ball goes out of play else book the player stood ready to take the throw, or failing that, the player nearest where the ball went out.
Either that or get rid of the enormous change that has brought in gamesmanship - restrict the money involved in the sport.

maybe when in cases last night the 'singing section' can start chanting "tick tock, tick tock" or counting the seconds.
personally I say 'Official Timekeeper' is the way to go with clock stopped when ball goes out & starts when back in, folk say it'd last hours but they wouldnt bother wasting anywhere near enough.
1 fella is giving reasons as to why not & they're precisely the reason it is needed... teams slowing the game down ? well they do that now with no recourse.
I'm all for some kind of marker when it goes out for a throw as well, the amount of times it goes out near us in the corner & by the time it gets thrown they're closer to the dugouts than to us, both wasting time & stealing yards, a throw in near your own corner flag is 1 of the worse places on the pitch to get 1 yet head upfield 20 yds & it's nowhere near as bad, may as well put it out for a goal kick cos chances are you're better facing the gk than the throw in further upfield.

This is what grates me about football authorities these days. Stamp out on cheating? No, Clamp down on the mass of foul play that's existent in the game? No
But yet they insist on fining a team because their neck warmers shows a logo, change the penalty routine from a simple ABAB structure to ABBA, decide that teams hsould now kick the ball backwards from a kick off and put extra officials behind the goal who actually do nothing.
Why don't they grow some balls and actually make changes that actually change the game, rather than just making changes for arguments sake.

In Aussie rules football, the players are allowed a set amount of time to take a kick, if they take too long then the ref says play on, and the ball is immediately live. Football could use something similar, if you are taking too long for a throw in, ref calls play on and awards a freekick against you for handball as you are holding it when it becomes live. Take too long for a free kick, the opposition can tackle before you take it. They also have a rule that if you try and prevent someone taking a quick free kick, the opposition gets to move their free kick 50 metres closer to goal.

Something has to change re: time wasting but i think this could fruit a few problems in itself
1) Teams would still take a while over things in a "kill momentum" tactic, or a get you breath back tactic! Time wasting isnt just about running the clock down, it also is there to try and kill the oppositions momentum
2) The finish time of games could fluctuate even furthar than they do now e.g, last game of season everyone plays at the same time! 2 teams fighting against relegation, 1 needing a point to stay up the other needing a win, the team needing a point would just drag the game out as long as possible to see what the team needing a win finished, it could stem to a 20/30 minute advantage in some cases

I was watching Fulham v Watford the other week and with Watford 1-0 up, Ben Foster was at his best.
Its an art in itself, to drag it out for the longest amount of time without making it overly obvious to the powers that be!
An excelent one is alway the "Tim Howard" someone has a wayward shot that flies over, but you come charging out of your goal, to "have a go" at someone, HEY PRESTO, you are now 30 yards furthar away then were you were when the ball went out and now you have to slowly jog back to that spot, or even better, a furthar jog to retrieve the ball.
Or ball, goes int ocrowd, or skids along the advertising boards, its obvious the ball is going to get thrown to you, but carry on heading to the direction the ball was originally heading in! HEY PRESTO, the ball has been thrown away from you and you now have to slowly turn around and jog ever so slightly to the new place the ball has landed from the fan or ballboys "wayward" throw.
As i say, a peice of art whe nits not your team, i counted a minute and half goal kick the other week when there was only 3 minutes of stoppage time remaining, take some going
