2024/25 Tim Iroegbunam

He’s 21 and in his first season of playing first team football in the premier league.

Was playing well before his injury. Honestly our fans write players off far too quickly.
Writing him off is ridiculous but to be fair he’s a first team player in the PL who cost £10m and who is probably paid more every week than most people on here are in a year, he’s going to have people commenting on poor performances.

Hes never been given a chance imo when he first came before his foot injury - he looked very good .....

I think he looked promising but not ‘very good’. His lack of positional discipline and inability to keep levels up for 90 minutes were fairly clear issues but we focused on the positives because there weren’t many others around.

Like I said though it’s not about writing him off, that would be stupid. I just think it’s fair to say that he’s not really made much of a case to be playing more since he came back from injury.

His defensive awareness is shocking, judging by the 16 games he has played. His stamina will be gone by 60 odd mins.

I wouldn’t write him off, he has obvious talent. At the same time, it’s difficult to see him getting much game time with his deficiencies. He must focus on the defensive duties much more because I don’t think he offers enough going forward to play an 8 or 10 position

16 games or 6.2 games worth of minutes. Starting 5 and coming on as a sub in 11.

Hes not played 16 games, hes played IN 16 games.
Whichever way you look at it he’s got some big holes in his game.

Really promising start, petered out massively now. I think the truth is in the middle, he’s a talented kid but realistically he’s bottom prem/top of the championship currently.

I would love him to get a loan but he’s going to be needed here.

He didn't actually cost £10m, he cost the approximate equivalent of one Lewis Dobbin, who has been passed around from Villa's squad to WBA's bench to Norwich's bench..... In other words about 3 mill. Bringing him on for 10 minutes a game is tantamount to wasting whatever he has to offer, which I think is still a fair bit. I think that he will probably struggle to secure substantial game time for the rest of this season, but he had an excellent pre-season in 2024, and may do the same this year.

He cost £10m. Whether that was a PSR swindle or not is a different point, but he cost £10m on the books. As I said, I think he has ability and writing him off is daft, but he’s 21 and a senior player in a premier league team so people will comment on his appearances as is normal.

Yes, but you're missing the point because signing him meant we got £10m for Dobbin which is daylight robbery.

Well not really, it’s you who’s missing the point which is he’s a PL footballer. All I’ve said is it’s not really out of order to say you want a bit more from him because that’s what happens at this level. Nobody should be writing him off or saying he needs to be playing in the conference but…they’re not. It’s fine to say that a proper member of the squad needs to perform to certain level isn’t it? Surely our standards haven’t dropped that far?

He’s currently at Holgate and Tom Davies’ level of poor. Shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team squad if, we are serious about improving. Loan him out, see if he improves, if not, sell.

The main reason for buying him has now passed. It was never really about his ability.

His performance against Bournemouth was really good, but he hasn't really replicated that yet. I don't read an enormous amount into the cameos, I think he's done ok in some and looked a bit lost in others.

A couple of thoughts for me though is that firstly he looks like he has a lot of tools. But having a lot of ability, and being an effective sportsman are different thing. I think the best players know how to make themselves functional. Think of say a Lampard, he had a real football intelligence to make himself useful to a manager. Love him or loathe him, Doucoure sort of does that too. So that's a challenge for him.

I also have this nagging doubt, that he may have what I'd call the Tom Davies syndrome. Basically he takes outrageous risks, gets away with them at first through surprise, but quite quickly people work him out and then he's a liability. That journey basically went for Davies, who went very quickly from a midfielder who would go past people, to a liability who lost the ball.

I think Tim has more to his game than Davies, he's bigger, faster, stronger. He also wins the ball back more. But it's just a nagging doubt. If he just keeps trying to dribble past people, and players are prepared for it, he's going to start quickly losing the ball.

That being said, he's 21 and another player who will probably benefit from Moyes and a pre season. In terms of the first process, I actually think it's a bit strength of Moyes. I'm not sure how far he improves players, as he makes them functional. Cahill became a goalscoring mid. Peinaar had that pre assist thing with Baines, Arteta becane a creative wide midfielder etc.
