Tim Howard

How many times do we concede goals from headers inside the 6 yard box because Howard is rooted to his line instead of coming out to claim it? It's costing us time and time again.

Ironically, those times he should stay on his line, he's often miles off it, leading to more goals conceded. For example the 2-0 defeat at home to Sunderland towards the end of last season. He was miles off his line for both goals, but if he stayed on his line he'd have had two easy saves. And before the pro-Howard brigade start saying, "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't," it's all about judging when to come, when to stay and where to position yourself. Howard's judgement is terrible.

With a good keeper, we'd be outsiders for a top four slot, but with Howard we have no chance. I'm amazed Martinez didn't address this in the summer.

We had plenty of opportunities to replace him, Jack Butland should have been bought when he was available, think we haggled over 300k if memory serves me right. Stoke now have a keeper in place for the next 10 years if he stay's there. Howard has served his purpose, if we are to move on we need to buy and buy big if needed, not some youngster who we hope will develop.

So we should have signed Butland when he was about 18 and 3 years away from first team premier league football, but we shouldn't buy some youngster who we hope will develop? Interesting...

Remember when Coutinho had that tame shot that was floated straight to him and he punched it straight out in front of him to within about 3 feet of Sturridge? Funny that

Don't think there is any question in my mind now that there are other reasons why Howard is still first choice other than his performance on the pitch.
Whether it's something to do with the American market or his influence in the dressing room, think we are going to have to accept him.
His positioning and decision making are costing us but I have decided to take a positive view that it's a short term loss for long term gain in sharpening up our defence

I disagree with the sentiment he's one of the worst keepers in the league. But that's two games in a row where he should have claimed balls in his 6 yard box, hasn't and we've suffered accordingly. Tim's always been a good shot stopper but poor at commanding his box in the air and with shaky distribution.
He's a good top 10 keeper but we need to be looking for a keeper of top 5 or 6 quality to match the rest of the talent we have in our team. Priority alongside bringing in a playmaker and Striker next summer.
He's given the team plenty but I think we need better.

Absolutly spot on being saying it on here for a year now!

Two goals in last two games he's cost us, virtually identical! All he has to do is take 2/3 steps and catch it, even if he ain't going to catch it punch the damn thing! He's a shot stopper, but for the size of him he's really not good when it comes to crosses and its costing us again and again!

I can only assume the reason Martinez hasn't replaced him is that he has shown in the past that he can be a good shot stopper. In games where he's had to make reflex saves, where he has no time to think, he can look the dog's twitcher. For instance, against Wolfsburg at home last season he was brilliant. But that is becoming more and more rare, as his reflexes don't appear to be as good as they used to be.

In every other aspect of goalkeeping he's awful. If Howard has to think before he acts, he's found wanting.
