Tim Howard

The squad is moving on and leaving Tim Howard behind' just as it's left Distin, Alcaraz and Hibbert behind, and just as it's leaving Leon behind. Howard is in that same phase of his career age-wise and ability-wise. I hate to say it but he's a liability and he needs to be replaced. Star-jumps, inability to come off his line and poor distribution when players in receipt of the ball from him are under pressure.

Crucial we get a decent keeper to fit into what Roberto is building.

This to an absolute tee.
Wish Robles was given chance and able to take it. Another young lad to add to our stable.

I think this should be his last season as first choice. Its only my opinion but he doesn't command his 6 yard box never mine the whole area. Thats fundamental for a premier league keeper. Still has the odd good game but not consistently good which is whats needed in a keeper. I'll be surprised if its not on Martinez's transfer agenda next sunmer.

Needs to be replaced in the summer. I don't mind spending big on it so long as it's a good signing. Not taking control of his 6 yard box is unforgivable. He just wait to react rather than taking players out and claiming the ball.

I'd say his distribution is hit and miss. Can see why you'd question it but I think describing it as poor is harsh.

His kicking is okay for me. If you think about the number of times other Premier League goalkeepers spoon the ball out of play for no reason – he's not that bad.

The other things in your list I'd agree with. Personally I don't think he has the absolute confidence in his own ability that the top goalkeepers have. He's still half expecting to mess things up, especially in the air, so he doesn't really assert himself. When he's on top of his game he looks good, sadly he tends do something ridiculous that ruins his run of form and then he goes back into his shell.

Spot on this. Howard's at best, an average keeper, at a time when there aren't many really top class keepers in the Premier League. He knows he's not that great, lack of confidence at ManU is the reason he joined us, he's not getting any younger, and the progression in other parts of the squad is showing him up. If we're to push on, we need a much better keeper.

FWIW played golf with my RS mate today and we talked about the game...and the goal of course. His first comment was Barkley should never be marking in the box ever again. He didn't even once mention Howard. Just interesting the view from the other side.

Oh, no doubt about it, Barkley was more at fault for their goal than Howard was, but the defence has little confidence in Howard when it comes to crosses and corners. All our opponents know that if they hang a ball into the six yard box or thereabouts, Howard won't come, which puts the defence under pressure.

Any good keeper will come for the ball 7 times out of 10 under those sorts of circumstances and shout to let his defence know that's what he's going to do, which is why Tim is only an average keeper. He's not as awful as many make out, he's just not that great.

Not sure about that tbh, Barkley is not good at marking at set pieces so why give him the responsibility in the first place? Regardless, Howard with his size should be commanding the 6 yard box between the posts at least (appreciate he has never done so in his career which makes the decision to put Barkley in that critical position even more baffling).

If he didn't do it every other corner, we'd be more likely to hammer the blame on Barkley. It was poorly defended, but I can guarantee he was assuming his goalkeeper would be claiming it given it should have landed on top of his head.

I watched the highlights about 20 minutes ago and I still reckon Barkley's more at fault than Howard. It doesn't really matter that defending set pieces isn't his thing, I'm assuming Martinez or his coaching team put him there rather than Howard.

However, we've seen similar things time and time again, and Howard's the common denominator. If push comes to shove, he's an experienced international goalkeeper and he needs to organise the defence in front of him at set pieces, and make an effort to get to the ball when it's sensible to come off his line. He won't change so he's getting close to being the first position we need to think about strengthening next summer.

January window if we are lucky?
