You say this after watching the penalty again and again? The fact that it even would have been close to Ayew getting there makes it a no no pass. What value was possibly going to be gained. It was all risk and no reward. I think it's now reached consensus that Howard needs to be dropped. He's lost a lot in the way of athleticism, doesn't trust himself, and his technique was not refined enough to let him continue on after losing his athletic ability. However, using a poor keeper to cover up for the golden boy's mistakes is wrong. Stones overall defending this term has been crap, and he takes too many risks in dangerous situations. That pass should have never been made. Simple as.
The pass was undercooked. It wasn't that bad of a pass though. Any non-totally incompetent keeper collects that pass and sends it out at worst. Howard moved backward allowing Ayew onto the ball. AND THEN mistimed the tackle when the ball was nowhere near his nets.
Stones deserves the blame insomuch as he thinks passing it to Howard is not the equivalent of taking a potshot at your own goal.
That's not defending Stones' overall play, or even suggesting the pass was the right decision. It's just pointing out that the pass shouldn't have led to a penalty, because Howard shouldn't have committed a war crime of positional play.
