It's a baseball reference...don't know if it'll translate...but the best catchers who stop balls getting to the backstop are referred to as backstops.

The actual backstop is a fence that prevents the ball from going into the stands.

Highly doubt it will translate.

Used to have backstops in schoolboy cricket because the wicketkeeper &/or bowler were so poor that they needed someone way behind the keeper to hoover up the wayward/missed deliveries. I suspect the Yanks borrowed that term from cricket?

Anyway, Mr Howard didn't impart much feeling of security in me last night. I can understand why RM wont drop him as it will seem like pandering to the fans, but he (Howard) does my head in
