They have put chin straps over the back of their hats, parted the leather to make a plait and used a copper binding to stop the plait coming undone. It makes a very effective fly swat with many of the outdoor staff fitting them.

The idea came from Graeme Norton (pictured with his hat), the District Supervisor for council’s Electricity Supply division.

“The outdoor staff need their hats for at least six months of the year and that is when the fly problem is at its worst,” council’s Works Depot Administration Officer, Vonnie Ferguson, said.

“Their Akubra’s now serve a dual purpose, giving them sun protection and helping keep the fly nuisance under check. They can wave them away from their face easily enough but getting them off their backs was a problem until now.”
