Thomas Graveson - One of our best?

Gravesen could be quality but he was wildly inconsistant. He used to infuriate me as he had this knack over always trying to play a stupid ball when an easier one was on and made more sense.

That season we finished 4th it was all about Gravesen. He'd lay one on a plate for Marcus bent every game & Bent would tuck it away. Back then that was all that was needed, 1-0. Job done.
Nice curler against Palace (I think!) as well.

In fairness I think to say that Gravesen or Carsley were "one of our best" is an insult to the "best" who have played for our club (Alan Ball, Colin Harvey, Peter Reid, Howard Kendall, Joe Royal, Adrian Heath), they were the best of that era. I would make a case for Cahill and Arteta for being amongst the best during our Premiership years.

Adrian fecking Heath!!???

Gravesen was a top quality player, a wonderful footballer, i knew someone would come out with the old chestnut that Madrid actually wanted Carsley. The truth is of course that apart from the bald heads, the two were so different from each other it was untrue. Carsley worked hard and could do the simple things. Grav was inconsistent, but had tremendous skill and a range of passing that most players would only dream about.

He didnt just have a good 6 month spell either - prior to this season, he had to play with some real dross alongside him - Li Tie, Nyarko, Linderoth etc. Only when we got the balance right and he was playing alongside Cahill with Carsley behind was he allowed to really shine. We virtually fell apart when he left despite the arrival of Arteta. Real shame his legs had gone when he came back to the club.

Didn't marcus score 6 goals that season? Hardly every week TBF.

Pmsl. Probably, but the lad was ****e. first touch like a rapist but it felt like it was him & gravo that were our only attacking outlets at times. Superb defence that season. Joey Yobo was immense

I remember seeing a lot of interviews in programs and whatnot from Everton players who when asked who the most technically gifted player they've ever played with was, said "Tommy Gravesen"

Says a lot about how he was thought of like

Could hardly get a game. Weir and Stubbs were brilliant.

Carsley was the engine mate. His energy made Gravesen look twice the player. Without Carsley alongside him he was nothing special.

It actually went like this:

Both Graveson & Carsley started out as limited midfield bruisers. Then Graveson learnt to command the middle, and even did some mad skillz. Carlsey was happy to remain the bruiser to his more cultured brother. When Graveson left, Carsley missed him so much that he actually turned into him: commanding the midfield and developing skillz we never knew he had.

Both of them were favourites of mine, both of them at their respective peaks are very close in ability. Carsley's best form for us was after his brother left, but while playing together, Graveson was the better player.

Like many ex-Evertonians...the best form of their lives was when wearing our blue. Rooney is the exception which generally proves the rule.

we havent signed a player since (with the exception of Fernandes on loan) with the ability to play a defence splitting pass like he could

class player

Real deffo meant to sign Carsley but he didn't have a foreign name

yobo barely played it was all about weir and stubbs

what a season that was, won't get another one like that now, no heart in footy

if memory serves me right didn't we sign carsley when it looked like gravesen was about to leave following a interview when on international duty saying he wanted off?
Took carsley a while to become a regular as well after moyes replaced smith but the 2004/2005 season the 2 really clicked playing behind cahill, gravesen had the 6 months of his career then but we deffo replaced him in a better player with arteta.
