The Baines-Pienaar link works best when there is a third man alongside them. That way we can play triangles and hold the ball longer, waiting for the quick dart to happen to free one of them up. Problem is, that third man is now usually Osman and he is not getting there quite quick enough to provide that link. So more often than not it's just the two of them left to their own devices and they are then much easier to pin down and keep tight to the touchline. One other thing of course -- Baines is now being marked like a left winger. So, at Arsenal for instance, Walcott kept tight to him all game. So much so that Walcott never got forward.
