The view from the top of the Empire State Building, post 9/11, where you can see where the mighty towers once stood

Cutting back and forth going down the trail at Steven's Pass through all the freshly fallen powder.

Innertubing down Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Forest.

Orca watching off of the Strait of Juan de Fuca

Niagra Falls (though the Canucks can claim this too)

The Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah

The Arches National Park in Utah (and all the Mormons)

Yellowstone National Park

Yosemite National Park (I was born in the town here)

Mariposa, CA (my aforementioned birth town)

The US side of niagra falls is the crappy one not many people know about, whats the deal with the "horseshoe" proper niagra falls, when I went there they said it was actually retreating into america a little bit every year.

Does it at some point become part of the US?

P.S. The shops and stuff around Niagra falls on the canadian side are tacky and nasty... very dissapointing.

Music - Tom Waits, Dylan, Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, Beck,

Films - Dog Day Afternoon, Tarantino, the first 3 star wars, Top Secret,

Literature - Whitman, Cummings, O'Hara, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Bukowski, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Elmore Leonard,

Fast Food - Big Mac may be as moreish but Taco Bell is crack cocaine. Get thee behind me satan. Cheap, nasty, calorific and nothing to do with quality authentic mexican food, but its ace.

US Sport - I'm one of the 0.5% of english people that "gets" the NFL. Cant say I feel the same about basketball, baseball or ice hockey.

Cities - Las Vegas (the only postmodern city in the world, architecture wise?), San Francisco.

Humour - Mr Hicks of course, Richard Pryor, Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy (in the 80's doing stand up was most funny), Curb your enthusiams is good as well.

many more of the top of my head.

Still bristling about the Anti American insinuations directed at me recently. So I thought I'd revive an old thread I started.

and add a few to the list.

politics - always dead critical about american politics as I think its my right. feels like the 51st state here anyway we may as well have a say. For the most part I'm disparaging about the US politically, but i tell you, when Obama got elected, I took my hat off to them, honestly, when they say they american dream is dead you can always point to obama and say, this country is still a pioneer land of wonderful opportunities.

people - I didn't mention this first time round cos I thought it was a given. May as well put my cards to the table.
two ex girlfriends. One of them a travel writer, the other a wonderfully neurotic south cali girl - she's got an analyst and everything. Going out with her was like being in a woody allen film. Two good mates as well. One of them, a boston lad, sadly passed away. Still miss him.

telly - some proper telly coming out of the states. HBO particularly. The wire, deadwood, oz, band of brothers, Rome, sopranos.
Glee is wank like.

topography, flora and fauna - can't really compete with the states when it comes to scenic beauty. Yellowstone versus the lake district. errr yeah.

drink - bourbon. Nuff said.

art - pollock, warhol, jasper johns, viola,

Colorado is Ace. You must all go there.

Neon. I do not think you were bashing America. Just bashing Government as a whole that you cannot trust, was just in a thread about the US Government so I get how some could take it that way.

Agreed. No way did I ever think they'd elect a Muslim born outside the United States.

There is a little place called THE WORLD mate...its in America somewhere I hear.

Three things I learned here...

1. Dylan loves America hard. Like real hard.
2. Neonleon has just moved into Nordy's Bumming territory.
3. Neonleon started this thread in 2007. WTF? Have you been here that long??

yes, I've been trying to bum Nordy since 2007, before Nordy was even on the forum.

It's a new technique called preemptive pre-planned bumming.

Don't understand the bit in bold. Is it a down under thing?

And for the record marmite pisses all over vegemite.

Yellowstone is just a big Volcano. A really big one.

Marmite?

Ye Mar Mite more like!

Venice Beach, CA, my former home.
Santa Monica Pier
San Francisco
Sierra Nevada Mountains
California Coastline
Burning Man Festival
Trance parties in the desert and mountains outside of LA
Quiznos
Carl's Jr.
Fatburger
Music. Too many great American bands to list.
Contemporary art - Robert Williams, Anthony Ausgang etc.
Loads of stand up comedians. Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Doug Stanhope, Chris Rock and plenty more. There have been so many great American standups. Don't dig American sitcoms though.

Would love to see more of it to be honest. I only really know California.

I think I'd rather have a thread on what you hate about America(ns)!

Since I lived in England for awhile, here are a couple things (non political) that i like about america more than the UK

1. That i can drive twice the speed limit when no one's around and not worry about cctv/your damn photo radar bs. Same goes for giving someone a beating that really really deserves it.
2. That I can go hiking/fishing/hunting, head out into the wilderness (i live in colorado) and get a feeling that i'm really really alone.
3. Gas prices....so I can drive my big f'in truck that would take up both lanes of your dual carriageway.

But I do miss England, I'll admit. I lived in Herefordshire and thought the people were wonderful. And most of all, when Naomi with her beautiful chestnut hair and hazel eyes would speak to me with that smile on her freckled face...her accent would melt me.
