2025/26 Thierno Barry

Think everyone needs to reset their expectations if they think £30 million buys you a guaranteed immediate regular goalscorer in the toughest league in Europe.

Everton can't afford to waste £30 million? Well dunno about wasting it but they're going to have to pay it and more across multiple positions every window from here on in as that the way the leagues gone.

Fans will just have to be PATIENT
It should buy someone who'll at least put opposition defenders under pressure.

Funniest thing is you don't even have to be patient to not write off a player who's played about 200 minutes. Even waiting for about half a season is probably still quite impatient.

I’m of the opinion that football teams should be built from front to back. If you have a big target man who wants to head crosses in then you play wingers who can cross the ball, if you have a pace merchant up front who can’t hold it up then you play midfielders who can slide the through ball, if you have a player good with their feet then you could play two flyers either side that he can spring loose (e.g Aguero at City, or Kane at Bayern)

At Everton though we've played to our striker’s profile a handful of times recently. For half a season with Jelavic we gave him pull backs on the floor in the area and he finished, then we stuck Fellaini behind him the season after and started playing for Fellaini rather than Jelavic. Lukaku had a great few seasons with Barkley behind him giving him the service he wanted. Then Beto had a purple patch at the back end of last season playing on the counter.

Apart from that though we’ve played long high balls to Andy Johnson and Neil Maupay, we tried to play on the counter attack with Cenk Tosun, we played short to Calvert Lewin. We even stuck Anthony Gordon upfront under Lampard and hit a load of crosses at him.

We should look at what service Barry wants and set the team up to play to that. If we’re playing Beto we should give him the service he wants. At the moment though we’re playing a slow possession game where we shift the ball to the left and look for Grealish to pull it back to the edge of the area. I’m not sure what striker is going to score when that’s our only attacking play.
