I can remember reading an article about if EFC wanted to save 5 million they need look no further than Dean Ashton at Crewe as he was an ideal younger option & just near by ....
so Villa were in for Beattie & DM signed him = fact - back then 6 million was a massive fee & Beattie was a massive flop .....

No DM knew better in fact it was Kevin Phillips of Southampton he should have signed far cheaper too .... in fact he could have signed him & Ashton & got plenty of change too.....

Beattie was so sh1t3 man , no pace , big boobs . Bit of hindsight history here. Dean Ashton moved to Norwich for £3 million the same time Beattie moved to Everton for £6 million. Ashton was considered a big risk.
