British Gov't today announce public apology for sending " poor " British children to Australia in the 1940's and '50's .
Many received horrendous treatment , and some still suffer to this day .
What say you , McB ???
Not exactly ,Advance Australia Fair , kid ???

as i said in the family tree thread...

absolute disgrace what our government did with all of those kids, to think that a young kid was shipped over to the other side of the world, seperated from any remaining family they had on arrival, and then used as slave labour by the church, and abused on a regular basis.

the film 'The leaving of Liverpool' first alerted me of what went on, although i know that 9 of my grandads brothers were shipped away and never seen again.

it shouldn't be down to the government of Australia to be apologising, i dont even think it should be Brown. this should come right from the top Her Maj herself should be doing the apologising.

I never heard about this, sounds a bit sad. Is this part of the white australia thing - I never really thought that was a bad thing in the day, of course the country is going to be a lot happier if people have the same ideals and you don't have different factions forming and fighting amongst each other.

I know one ship with loads of kids on board got sunk by torpedos and most perished, Churchill covered it up until long after the war

Kevin Rudd apologised to those people today.

Its a shocking thing and my heart goes out to those people.

Im not sure your angle on this though LCAB....who are you implicating? Our Government apologised...

As of 2009, there were an estimated 7000 "home children" currently residing in Australia. Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd apologised on behalf of Australia on 16 November 2009.[5] The Australian government had contacted about 400 British child migrants for advice on how the apology should be delivered. It is believed Gordon Brown will also issue an apology on behalf of the UK in early 2010.[3] Australia's Roman Catholic Church had publicly apologised in 2001 to British and Maltese child migrants who suffered abuse including rape, whippings and slave labour in religious institutions.[4] A £1m travel fund was set up for former child migrants to visit their families in the UK.

My angle was , that we sent them to you in good faith . They were abused .
That's about the top and bottom of it , my mate .

The church abused them, as they have done kids forever.

No mind, whats done is done. Would they have fared better in UK orphanges is a mute point.
