The solution to our weakness out wide?

Idk... play wingers? And for those scoffing at the idea of playing attackers as wing backs, the top clubs do it frequently. Gana and Schneiderlin are supposed to cover for them when they venture forward. I'd rather have actual defenders in those positions, but I can see the logic of playing the likes of Lennon or a Vlasic at wing back. Koeman would need to make sure that Ganerlin do a better job covering for them though.

Stop packing Rooney, Sigurdsson and Klaassen in the midfield. Play more players who is willing to pass the ball forward. Play the full back who can cross and can defend properly.

Simple really, play wingers and play players in their actual positions.

Something like:

Pickford
Kenny Keane Jagielka Baines
Davies Gana
Lookman Sigurdsson Vlasic
DCL

Not a chance he'll ever play that though. Best hope is that one of Lookman/Vlasic play out wide and either Sigurdsson is on the left or Rooney on the right, depending on which of the two he plays behind the striker.

Lennon and Bolasie could defo become decent wingbacks, though Baines is the only left-footed outfield player in our entire squad shockingly enough. We'll have to sign an LB in January.

Koeman knows how to setup a team with width. The problem is he prefers not to. It's insanity or stubbornness on his part.

We have the personnel to play two inside forwards who are instructed to move out wide when we are in possession of the ball and challenge the opposition full backs and usually a centre back. This then facilitates midfielders running from deep into the last third.

The problem with Koemans setup is that our two inside forwards or no10s are instructed to stay narrow, hence offering nothing from the wide areas and causing congestion in the middle.

The other downside to this narrow tactic is that it suffocates space and movement which is why we look like statues.

For a narrow tactic to be successful, you need a team that presses high and has pace to burn from the front players. The idea is to force the opposition into errors by pressing high and then getting behind the defence via pace.

The problem is we don't have the personnel to deploy this tactic. I'm lost as to what is going through Koemans mind. As I said, he is either insane or stubborn.
