The solution to our weakness out wide?

Play with a single anchorman in midfield and 2 midfielders ahead of him.

A central striker and 2 wide attacking players in support, who can also offer cover to the full backs, or in other words a 4-3-3

Personally this is the starting 11 I'd like to see next week. (4-2-3-1) Pickford, Kenny(RB), Holgate(CB), Williams(CB), Baines(LB), Schneiderlin(DM), Gueye(DM), Vlasic(RW), Sigurdsson(CAM), Lookman(LW), Niasse(ST). I think we can all agree our biggest problem is not having enough width and clearly only having width from the full backs isn't good enough. It leaves us extremely vulnerable to counter attacks when you have Martina and Baines in LW and RW positions while we're in possession. All it takes is one bad pass and it's a 3 on 2. We're very easy to play against atm, because we're so congested, and it's only common sence that the addition of wingers, to provide width along with the full backs, will fix that. We've played the 4-2-3-1 for years, but Koeman seems to opt for a very narrow 4-3-3. Think about what was most effective for us in the past. Think about Pienaar and Baines playing off each other, or even sometimes Mirallas with Coleman flying on the overlap. Our full backs overlapping lead to a lot of success. Now, we're asking them to sit right on the touchline in a very advanced position and wait for the ball to come to them. It just adds to the serious lack of movement in our team. And speaking of overlaps, opposing teams are destroying our full backs because they're simply no wingers dropping into defensive positions to help them out. I can only hope that Bolasie comes back sooner rather than later because I feel like Koeman will be forced to change up his tactics once he comes back. Lets hope Koeman comes to his senses.

Forgive me mate, but there's two yawning chasms of flaws in your thinking...

It was plain to see yesterday that Gueye and Schneiderlin needs to be replaced by Tom Davies and one of either Gueye or Schneiderlin.

Davies offers much more in the way of positivity.

And despite his goals in the last two games for which we're grateful, starting Niasse ahead of DCL if you're playing Lookman out wide to provide crosses into the box, is defeating the object.

I give Niasse enormous credit for not giving in and doing the business when given the chance, but DCL has to be the starter up front for me, his all-round game is much better than that of Niasse.

Oumar has a role to fulfil as the impact substitute imo.

Yannick, our (next) saviour, is back soon. Him, Vlasic and Lookman are gonna rip teams a new one in the New Year. If Ronald ever decides to play with wingers like.

We seem to be relying on our full backs/wing backs for width this season which isn't really working. Mainly because Baines isn't what he used to be, Holgate doesn't offer much going forward and Martina is just a bit crap.

Do you think we've got any wingers that we could convert into an attacking wing back/full back in the same way that Chelsea have done with Moses and Manu have done with Valencia and Young?

Lennon? Vlasic? Mirallas? Lookman? Bolasie?

Thoughts?

It may be a novel idea but why not play full backs at full back and wingers as wingers.
There is enough pace in the squad to do both.
If yesterday's game taught us anything it's that.
Kenny should be first choice RB till Coleman is back.
Holgate is not good enough YET to play in in a 2 man central defence.
Martina is not good enough.
DCL for all his qualities and leaving aside the fact that he is improving week by week is not good enough YET to play up front on his own.
Rooney Sandro Naisse need to be played alongside him in a 4/4/2 or a 3/5/2
I'd prefer the 3 /5/2 as it would allow Kenny and Baines to operate further forward as well as defend.
It would also allow Siggy to play in the middle behind 2 CF or drift wide when it suits him.

Or tell Baines to get forward and play Kenny.

You can't just say PLAY WINGERS. We don't have any other than Bolaisse and Lennon. We don't have a target man.

We have inside forwards. Tell one guy to play better rather than 4 or 5 to play out of position.

That's fair enough, DCL has been one of our best players this season by a mile, I was just curious to see what Niasse could do in 90 minutes. But you're right, DCL has shown he can be that target man, and as for Tom Davies, I honestly didn't even think of him, which is quite embarrassing, I think Koeman has brainwashed me into thinking Schneiderlin and Gueye provide a bit of solidity in front of our back 4, which in truth they have been quite shocking on the ball this season, adding absolutely nothing as an attacking threat. When Davies came on he did far more than both of them combined all game, his pass for the Niasse' first was world class. He has incredible vision for such a young player. So after being reminded of Tom Davies, I'm thinking maybe a 4-1-4-1, with Davies alongside Sigurdsson through the middle and I guess Gueye sitting in the pocket behind them.

For me it should be either:
Pickford
Kenny Keane Jags Baines
Gueye
Lookman Davies Siggy
Niasse DCL

Pickford
Kenny Keane Jags Baines
Gueye
Lookman Davies Vlasic
Siggy
DCL/Niasse
