Every now and then a photograph is taken which is so undeniably poignant that it serves the earth like a distinct memory does for us.

Sometimes these snapshots in time are too horrible to contemplate and sometimes they show the very best and brightest of humanity.

Either way, each one deserves the thought it gets and here are some of the most powerful pictures out there.
