Great piece. Not OTT, just gets its point across.

And this stands out re resting players:

"In 2009...we played Liverpool three times in 16 days, with games against Arsenal and Manchester United sandwiched in between. Of those five, we lost only once to a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, and if Leon Osman, Tim Cahill and Phil Neville had started the game on Tuesday, Everton would have fielded nine of the 11 players who started the majority of those games."

'Prioritisation' my arse.

"David Moyes is looking at the bigger picture

STEVEN GERRARD has been brilliant for Liverpool.

He was the difference between a fully-fit Liverpool and a weakened Everton side. Now David Moyes has taken some unnecessary stick for his team choice in the derby and had to rest players for Saturday, whether fans paid £48 for a ticket or not.

Nobody forces you to go but I’m sure a win on Saturday and the same set of fans will be living it up at Wembley Stadium in a month’s time. Both Manchester squads are the biggest in Europe and even they have recently proved how hard it is to play three big games in eight days.

Within the last month we’ve beaten Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City and there’s possibly a semi-final to go with all that. Moyes is looking at the bigger picture not the bragging rights for a months. I know which one I prefer"

Thats from the fans opinion thing in the Echo today - I think thats a fair assesment of the situation

Doesn't really address the point though does it mate? Look at that run in 2009 and tell me that the present fixture 'pile up' is anywhere near more difficult.

No excuse.

I reckon if we got through to the semi and had someone like Swansea or Bolton midweek he wouldn't rest as many players.

I'm not saying its more difficult mate - just that i can see why he's done it - we also had more to play for at that stage in the league in 2009 & its was an earlier round of the FA Cup (no Wembley place on offer)

That's true about the better league position, but are you saying league position wasn't imortant going into this Derby...a chance to move ahead of Liverpool and break the Anfield duck in one fell swoop?

As far as the point about that 2009 run not culminating in a crack at Wembley, I think that's sort of backs my point up that Moyes has sacrificed a Derby for a day in the limelight. Not something that should be boasted about IMO, like.

I would have loved to beat them & go above them but we achieve very little other than bragging rights for that.. You make a good point about 2009 but we also ended up staggering into that final with key players missing

I think after 10 years Moyes wants a trophy to show for his efforts & values that over the chance to finish between 6th - 10th in the league
