When I did my National Service in Singapore, we had a ginger Scottish guy who was desperate for a tan (like all the other guys). Every bit of spare time he would lie in the sun. He would go red, stay red for a few days, then go back to white, with freckles. He once overdid it and was covered in blisters for a couple of weeks. In the second week the pieces of skin hung off him like curtains.
