Depends what level of Minor league. To put in English footy thinking:
AAA is Championship
AA is League One
High A is League 2
Single A is National League
And Rookie League is akin to youth academies.

The minor leagues are player development teams. The clubs may or may not be owned by major league teams but all the players are under contract with major league teams, so they are fully professional.

However, the players in minor league ball make a pittance in comparison. They generally make $5000-$50000/year. The minimum salary of a major league baseball player is $760,000. The average is $4.7M.
