Arteta was being valued at at least 20 million the summer before. Arsenal got an absolutely brilliant deal through getting him at 10 million, he was worth far more imo. Everton needed to sell Arteta to appease the banks. You are seriously naive if you think Everton hadn't already agreed the fee with Arsenal. The 'transfer request' is used so that the player doesn't get his loyalty bonus, and it is also used as a way of appeasing fans. Arsenal took the piss that day, they knew that Everton were in no position to bargain and that we had to sell to balance the books.
The quality of the deal and/or the player being sold isn't the issue, it's the fact that players have HAD to be sold in order to balance the books and appease the banks because we had spent beyond our means. Which is exactly the same thing as what Peter Johnson has been so vilified for. Rodwell was sold to cover our annual loss.
Are you really trying to pass off Joau Silva and Magaye Guaye as frst team players? If you are then can you tell us whether you consider them to be inferior or superior to the likes of Carl Tiler, John Spencer and Mitch Ward?
I think you might be confusing me with someone who is a fan of Peter Johnson? I am not surprised that he was serving his own interests whilst simultaneously injecting cash into the club through a share issue, nor do I consider it to be the biggest crime in the world. My point is that Kenwright and Johnson's tenures at Everton have been remarkably similar in a number of ways. I think they are both as bad as each other.
Remember Peter Risdale and Leeds??? Thats what almost happened with us under Johnson, his business practices were completely flawed to the point it almost bankrupt the club. I know its hard to understand because people just think that the rights issue was away of putting a cash injection into the club, when in fact it was a quick fix to the balance sheet, its a way of hiding the truth. All sales were underwritten against outside influences, if they failed the lending ability of the club was ruined, our problem was they did fail. Johnson tried to hide is mistake, it got to bad and he sold assets, the crowd turned and he walked away instantly leaving us with a debt
Now Kenwright tried to go the other way, first off he bolloxed everything up with NTL which added to 'manageable' debt; a stupid mistake which we are still paying for. What Kenwright has done compared to Johnson is that he has removed assets from the club (i.e. outsourcing etc) to face up to the debt, instead of trying to bury it.
They are both awful Chairmen, but we edged closer to the edge with Johnson than you can ever imagine.
And no I wasn't trying to pass Silva and Guaye off as first team players, i was just being an arse and trying to prove a point ;-)
