World Cup draw: England boss Gareth Southgate in Moscow to learn opponents

The 2018 World Cup draw will be made at the State Kremlin Palace concert hall on Friday, 1 December.

World Cup 2018 draw.

Venue: State Kremlin Palace, Moscow Date: Friday, 1 December Time: from 15:00 GMT.

Coverage: Watch live on BBC Two & the BBC Sport app from 15:00 GMT, live on BBC Radio 5 live Drive from 15:20 GMT and follow live text commentary from 13:00 GMT on the BBC Sport website.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate is in Moscow for the draw, which will be conducted by ex-England striker Gary Lineker, at the State Kremlin Palace.

England will be seeded and will not play Spain in the group stage.

"This is going to be a really exciting period," said Southgate. "From our point of view, the draw is the next stage of being able to plan properly."

A tough scenario would see England drawn in the same group as five-time winners Brazil, seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions Egypt, and Serbia.

An easier draw, on paper, would see them in a group with Poland, Iran and Panama.

"We have a plan in place that will trigger as soon as that draw is made," added Southgate.

"Not only will we know who our group stage opponents are but also who we might face further down the line.

"We'll know which teams we need to be researching properly and in detail over the next few months and most importantly, which dates we're going to be playing on.

Gareth Southgate was appointed England manager on a four-year deal on 30 November 2016
"Our analysis department will put all of that in place and we'll have footage of the other teams good to go from Friday night.

"We'll also have a plan of how we will cover games in the tournament.

"We feel it's important to get those details right as they can give you an advantage and we don't want to leave any stone uncovered."

The World Cup, which will feature 32 teams, takes place between 14 June and 15 July.

Africa's representatives are Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia. From North and Central America and the Caribbean, it is Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama.

South America's sides are Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay. And the Asian qualifiers are Australia, Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

The World Cup finals draw is on Friday, 1 December at Moscow's State Kremlin Palace concert hall at 15:00 GMT. You can watch it live on BBC Two and the BBC Sport website and app, and listen on BBC Radio 5 live.

It will be hosted by former England striker and BBC Match of the Day presenter Lineker, who played at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, and Russian sports journalist Maria Komandnaya.

"As a player, I was fortunate enough to take part in the World Cup finals on two occasions," Lineker told Fifa.com. "It is quite special to be involved in yet another tournament now on the stage, unveiling the results of the draw.

"I have been on the other side, waiting to find out my opponents, and I know how exciting this occasion is."

Teams will be seeded based on the October 2017 Fifa world rankings. There are four pots - each containing eight teams. Russia will be joined in pot one by the seven highest-ranked teams, with the next eight in pot two, the following eight in pot three and the lowest ranked eight in pot four.

No teams from the same confederation, with the exception of Uefa, will be drawn in the same group. A maximum of two European countries can be in any group.

The guests at the draw will include representatives from each of the eight nations to have won the World Cup: Laurent Blanc (France), Gordon Banks (England), Cafu (Brazil), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Diego Forlan (Uruguay), Diego Maradona (Argentina), Carles Puyol (Spain) and Miroslav Klose (Germany)

Russia World Cup 2018: Host Cities
Defending champions Germany are the bookmakers' favourites, followed by Brazil, Spain, Argentina, France, Belgium and then England.

Joachim Low's Germany are bidding to become the first country to win back-to-back World Cups since Pele's Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Germany
Northern Ireland were among the five teams to lose twice to Germany in qualifying
Germany have not lost a World Cup finals or qualifying game since the 2010 semi-final against Spain. They came through 2018 qualifying with 10 wins from 10 - scoring 43 times and only conceding on four occasions.

Belgium, Spain and England all came through European qualifying unbeaten too.

Brazil cruised through South American qualifying - but only after replacing manager Dunga with Tite midway through the campaign. They had only won one of their opening six qualifiers, but under Tite they won 10 and drew two of their final 12 games to finish 10 points clear.

In Asia, Iran came through two different groups unbeaten - 18 games without defeat that included a run of 12 consecutive clean sheets.

Morocco qualified without conceding a goal in their six-game African group, finishing top ahead of Ivory Coast.

Panama
President of Panama Juan Carlos Varela declared a national holiday following their victory
Iceland are the only country with a population of under one million to have ever reached a World Cup. The Nordic nation had never qualified for a major tournament before Euro 2016, when they beat England on their way to the quarter-finals.

Central American nation Panama reached their first World Cup thanks to an 88th-minute winner against Costa Rica, which also eliminated the United States.

Christian Pulisic
The United States suffered a shock 2-1 defeat by Trinidad & Tobago to eliminate them from the World Cup
The biggest shock of the qualifying campaign came from Europe.

Four-time winners Italy missed out on a World Cup for the first time since 1958, losing to Sweden in their play-off.

The Swedes had reached the play-off on goal difference in their group ahead of the Netherlands, meaning the Dutch have failed to qualify for the past two major tournaments.

The Czech Republic, Wales, Scotland, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Turkey were among the other countries to miss out in the group stages - with the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Greece losing in the play-offs.

In the Concacaf region the United States finished below Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras as they failed to secure even a play-off berth. It is the first time since 1986 that they will not compete at a World Cup.

The Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Ghana - all of whom were in Brazil in 2014 - were among the big African nations to miss out.

Chile, ranked ninth in the world, went out in South American qualifying, missing out on a play-off on goal difference to 10th-ranked Peru.

Fifa received about 3.5 million ticket applications - including 300,000 for the final at the Luzhniki Stadium - during the first window in October, and about 622,000 were allocated via a randomly selected draw.

Ticket sales on a first-come first-served basis will resume this month.

About 57% of applications have come from Russian residents, while category four tickets are also exclusively reserved for those living in the host country.

The cheapest World Cup final ticket a non-Russian can buy is priced at £345.

Next World Cup hosts Russia and Qatar among least accepting of LGBT players, study reveals
Football fans in Russia and Qatar are among the most homophobic in the world, according to the largest-ever study of its kind.

LGBT equality charity Stonewall surveyed 50,000 supporters in 38 countries on attitudes to homosexuality, with results placing the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts in the 10 least-accepting nations.

Just 47 per cent of Russians say they would feel comfortable with a gay or bisexual player representing their national team while the figure is even lower in 2022 host country Qatar (14 per cent) where homosexuality is illegal.

‘Though I am proud of this report and our ability to give football fans one collective voice, the results make for unsettling reading.’

Forza Football CEO Patrik Arnesson

The survey, in collaboration with Forza Football, also asked whether consideration of LGBT rights should have an impact on which host nations are selected for international tournaments.

Again, Russia (26 per cent) and Qatar (14 per cent) were among the least likely to think so compared to the global average (64 per cent).

Iceland and Ireland lead the way

Supporters in western Europe were most comfortable with gay or bisexual players representing their national teams.

Iceland and Ireland (both 87 per cent) led the way, with the UK (80 per cent) third.

The least accepting nation was Egpyt (10 per cent), followed by Saudi Arabia (11 per cent) and United Arab Emirates (13 per cent).

Cause for optimism – but still work to do

On a positive note, there has been a general liberalisation of views across the world with Russia showing the greatest improvement in attitudes when compared to a similar survey from three years ago.

In 2014, just 21 per cent of Russian fans said they would be comfortable with a gay player representing their national team, compared to 47 per cent today.

However, in a world where there are no openly gay footballers in Europe’s top five football leagues and LGBT people still face discrimination worldwide, there is clearl still work to do.

“In 72 countries same-sex relationships are criminalised and, as this poll shows, where there is anti-LGBT legislation there will inevitably be hostile attitudes,” Ruth Hunt, chief executive of Stonewall, said.

“We believe sport has the power to bring people together and create change. For many LGBT people in Russia for example, the World Cup is seen as an opportunity for the daily abuses and discrimination they face to be put under the spotlight; to be questioned and criticised.”

Holding hands could be dangerous

The report comes amid growing concerns that football fans will face discrimination while attending next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Last month, gay supporters planning on travelling to the tournament were warned that holding hands could be dangerous.

Equality in football campaign group Fare advised that public displays of affection could provoke attacks and says it will be producing a guide to help fans avoid confrontation.

When Qatar was awarded the World Cup in 2010, former Fifa boss Sepp Blatter sparked controversy by saying gay fans should “refrain from sexual activity”.

Was shocked how little of an arse I gave, and how I'm simply not interested any more. This came crashing into my realisation when I saw the names of "run the ball into a crowd and fall flat on your arse looking at the ref again" Wilshire and Ja-ja binks Henderson listed. Be arsed watching that predictably tedious display.

About the only togger I watch on tv these days is Everton on motd and then only when we win, and only then when we're not last motd.

In short that's been about 3 times this year.

Get yeeself into non-league. It's boss.
Kind of follow Havant & Waterlooville. A mate lived in Waterlooville years back and I used to go to games with him when I visited. Imagine our delight when they had their fa cup run a few years back. And guess which boring unromantic team burst that be bubble. Typical rs. V nearly had them though.

Closer by there's a semi Pro team that a fella I play 5 a side with plays for. I should shimmy along one Saturday you're right.

See the lack of marketing is telling. Russia and Qatar killing the goose that laid the golden FIFA egg.
But oh no! How will the know what official fizzy sugar water to drink? What official tyres should I use on my car to go to the official fast food joint? What official B.O. paste should I use under my arms instead of washing? What official preening products so I can look as big a pillock as the stars being paid so little that they need endorsements?

How will we all cope without being told what's best for us? So many decisions!!

HELP ME!!!! Tell me who to give my money to!
