Nazi droppings. Every lad worth their salt collected shrapnel. It was lying about all over the place after a raid, which was every night. This is why air raid wardens, Firemen and Police all wore steel helmets. Sharp pieces of metal flying out of the night sky could take someones head off. One morning, I was stood outside the air-raid shelter in the back garden when I noticed something glinting in the ground. I dug it up and it was a piece of shrapnel about a foot long, bright, shiny silver and jagged edges. It also had some German writing on it. I took it to school and was the centre of attention. Even the teachers were asking to see it. In the afternoon, an older lad came and offered me a tennis ball, some comics and some sweets for it. All our football in the street was with tennis balls and they were like gold dust. I did the swap and went home happy. (I was 6 years old)
