True story, whenever he was going out for a meal he would always have duck. That way when anybody phoned the house for him his wife would say “he’s out for a duck”

The most famous cricket umpire bar none but mad things used to follow him around. To name but two I remember being at an Old Trafford Test match were he stopped play because he thought the sun was too bright and there was one at Headingley were he took the players off because a pipe under the ground suddenly burst and started flooding the outfield. He got terribly sledged off his fellow Yorkies when he approached the pavilion who hadn't noticed why he'd stopped play!

Great character and he will be missed in the world of cricket.
